About Plymouth

Plymouth City is located in the South West of England on Devon's coastline. The city has a rich history going back thousands of years and is one of the largest natural sea ports in the world. Located on the doorstep to Cornwall and below the rugged hills of Dartmoor, the city enjoys the enviable position of being accessible from all corners of the UK, Europe and internationally, due to a diverse transport infrastructure servicing the city, whether it is for business or pleasure.

With a population in the region of over 257,000, a student population of over 30,000, the city's main industry sectors are manufacturing, construction and mining. Some of the key employers in the city are: Babcock Marine, DML, British Aerospace, Siemens Systems, Princess Yachts and the University of Plymouth. It is also home of England's oldest working gin distillery.

Plymouth is a city famous as a starting point for many historic voyages. The Pilgrim Fathers set sail from the Mayflower Steps in 1620 that are located in the historic Barbican area of the city. Sir Francis Drake played his famous game of Bowls on the Plymouth Hoe Green, overlooking Plymouth Sound, prior to his triumph over the Spanish Armada invasion. Plymouth is also where Sir Francis Chichester began and ended the first solo circumnavigation of the globe; and the Plymouth Hoe is where Captain Cook and Charles Darwin set sail on their most famous journeys.

Rising high above Plymouth is the Dartmoor National Park. The area covers 368 square miles and is of great archaeological interest. This area is significant for its over 100 named granite tors and is thought to have begun life about 280 million years ago as a result of molten rock solidifying. Local and national schools and visitors alike make regular trips to various parts of the moor to understand and witness findings from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman times.
